A soprano xylophone sampled into a digital instrument with the ability to shape everything from a pitched percussion to a synthetic pad.
JH_Xylo is a digital instrument based on homemade sampling of a soprano xylophone. The original recorded keys with different velocity levels range from C4 to A5, but the instrument also include pitched keys which gives the entire instrument the key range of C2 to E6.
Three microphones were used to record the xylophone, including one dynamic microphone close to the top center along with two condenser microphones facing the instrument diagonally towards each end. The two Overheads (OHs) are fully panned, granting the instrument a stereo image when used.
Aside from volume knobs for each microphone, loads of other knobs are available in JH_Xylo. One group of knobs controls ADSR, another group adjusts equalization of frequency levels, one pair takes care of highpass and lowpass, and the chorus effect included can also be adjusted through three knobs. These variations lets you do whatever you’d like, whether you want to have an acoustic sound of a soprano xylophone or mixing it into a pad with flowing vibes.
